Sheung Wan Civic Centre|Pants Theatre: Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde (Re-run) - Sheung Wan Civic Centre Venue Partnership Scheme

Description
He was ostracised for love, and gained fame because of sin.
He was Oscar Wilde.
It was a 'love that dare not speak its name.'
For it, he was forced to stand trial in court.
It was a battle between art and hypocritical morals,
With three dramatic trials!
In the early 1890s, Oscar Wilde was at the height of his literary fame, his works shocking the literary world. He was married with children, but when he met the beautiful young Lord Alfred Douglas, he immediately fell head over heels in love. Douglas' father accused Wilde of committing sodomy, and Wilde angrily sued him for libel. The event shocked society, and Wilde ended up as the defendant, eventually being sent to prison. His family, career and life were destroyed.
An artist may have great talent and sensitive thoughts, but in the face of a hypocritical and treacherous society, he is still fragile and helpless.
This play focuses on Wilde's three trials, combining real historical records, interviews and letter fragments. One Pair of Pants Production first performed this play in 2013 to great acclaim, and now, after a 12-year hiatus, it is being staged again.
